Young female hair loss sufferers 'may be particularly affected'
Published: 16th of April 2010
While hair loss can be a distressing experience for anyone, it is perhaps young women who suffer the most serious stress.According to Denise King, chief executive of Girlguiding UK, there is considerable pressure on such people to look like the celebrities they see in magazines.
She remarked: "There are many factors that can influence how girls and young women feel about their bodies and one of these is the unrealistic images shown in magazines and advertising campaigns."
According to Ms King, people often pin all their sense of self-worth on their appearance unless they are given other reasons to feel good about themselves.
Her comments follow a decision by Britney Spears to publish un-airbrushed pictures of herself taken for underwear firm Candies.
The images were shown alongside edited versions, highlighting the difference between the two.
In the tampered photos, the 29-year-old singer - who herself suffered from hair loss at one time - appeared to have a smaller waist and flawless legs.
