Eating disorders 'can cause hair loss'
Published: 14th of April 2010
One of the health problems caused by eating disorders can be hair loss, a woman has confirmed.Laura McLean, who suffered from anorexia, weighed only four stone at the age of 20 because of her refusal to consume sufficient quantities of food, the Scottish Daily Record reports.
Anorexia describes a condition whereby someone tries to keep their bodyweight as low as possible by starving themselves or exercising excessively.
According to the NHS, around one in 250 women and one in 2,000 men will experience it at some stage of their lives and it often occurs in the later teenage years.
Commenting on her own story, Ms McLean revealed that at one stage, doctors told her she would die within two weeks if she did not eat.
At the time, she was shedding her locks because she did not have enough nutrients to sustain healthy tresses.
She has now gained weight and wants to train as a mental health nurse.
