Hair loss 'not just a male phenomenon'

Published: 13th of April 2010
Hair loss `not just a male phenomenon` While hair loss may be more typically associated with men, women can suffer from it too.

This month's issue of the Mayo Clinic Health Letter makes this point, noting that androgenic alopecia is the most common reason for people to shed their locks and this is experienced by both male and female patients.

Despite this fact, the condition is also known as male-pattern baldness.

According to the health letter, the medical complaint is a gradual thinning of people's tresses and it is often a natural part of the ageing process.

It pointed out that women with androgenic alopecia, unlike their male counterparts, often maintain their frontal hairline and rarely experience complete balding.

Instead, locks tend to thin over the entire scalp, with the most noticeable parts often along the parting line and on the crown.

As the NHS states, hair loss can lead to problems with confidence and self-esteem among sufferers.
