Hormones and genes 'contribute to male hair loss'
Published: 12th of April 2010
Both hormones and genes contribute to the loss of hair among men, an expert has said.Writing in the Vancouver Sun, Dr Mark Evans said the effect over time of exposure to testosterone-related hormones on genetically predisposed hair follicles leads to the thinning and eventually loss of tresses.
He made his comments in response to a reader, who said he is in his late 40s and does not suffer from thinning locks. The individual asked whether he was "home free".
Responding the question, Dr Evans stated that with respect to age and hair loss, "the news is not conclusive".
However, he added it is positive that the reader shows no signs of losing his locks by his age.
But this is "by no means a guarantee" that hair loss will not occur.
Those who do experience baldness should embrace it, the doctor went on to note.
Male-pattern baldness, also known as androgenic alopecia, is the most common form of hair loss in the UK and it can affect women as well as men.
