Expert identifies most common form of hair loss

Published: 29th of March 2010
Expert identifies most common form of hair loss A medical expert has noted that male-pattern baldness is the most common form of hair loss.

Writing in the Malaysia Star, the individual - who is referred to as Dr Y L M - said the condition results in locks falling out gradually.

He stated: "When you have male-pattern baldness, you don't really notice clumps of your hair coming out. It just thins out until it's not there anymore."

Men experience the condition more extensively than women, he added.

The NHS notes that this type of baldness - which is also referred to as androgenic alopecia - is more common than alopecia areata.

This affects only around one in 100 people and is more widespread among younger individuals.

One high-profile person who is currently recovering from alopecia is TV presenter Gail Porter, who has been pictured out and about sporting her new locks.

Five years ago, she lost her tresses while experiencing considerable personal stress.
