Group support helps youngster with hair loss
Published: 24th of March 2010
A girl who suffers from hair loss has said how being part of a support group has helped her deal with the condition.Nine-year-old Alex Poloway is a member of the Children's Alopecia Project, which is a non-profit organisation that helps families around the world understand and cope with the problem, the Pottstown Mercury reports.
She stated: "Being in a group makes you feel better because then you know not only you have it."
According to the NHS, the form of hair loss that most commonly affects young people is alopecia areata and, like all forms of the condition, it can cause problems with self-esteem.
Commenting on Alex's experience, her father, Dave Poloway, said that when he used to brush her hair, it fell out in big clumps.
He added that teaching a child how to cope with losing their tresses is very different than teaching an adult.
