Smoking 'may increase hair loss risk'
Published: 23rd of March 2010
As well as health risks such as heart disease and lung cancer, smoking may lead to an increased risk of hair loss.So noted Michele Blacksberg on an EmpowHer blog, pointing to a study conducted by researchers in Taiwan.
They tested whether the habit contributes to balding in men who were typically not as likely to suffer from androgenic hair loss as Caucasian or European males.
She noted that the results confirmed that those who smoked had a greater amount of hair loss on average than their counterparts who did not.
This was even when age and family history were taken into account.
Ms Blacksberg stated: "Smoking not only affects the inside hidden parts of their body, but also one area that we always notice in others - our hair."
According to figures cited by the NHS, around ten million adults in the UK smoke cigarettes.
It suggests that 25 per cent of men and 23 per cent of women have the habit.
