Hair loss can be "debilitating"

Published: 23rd of March 2010
Hair loss can be debilitating Developing hair loss can be "debilitating", one sufferer has said in reference to her own experiences.

A number of years ago, Liz Shiel's tresses began to fall out and she was eventually diagnosed with alopecia universalis, the Irish Independent reports.

According to the NHS, around one in five people who develop alopecia areata go on to get a more serious condition such as this.

The 35-year-old noted that she first found a bald patch in 1997 and then clumps of hair began to fall out.

She said: "It's as debilitating as any other disability. I've spent years wearing hats and hiding away from the world."

Ms Shiel went on to state that it is only in the last two to three years that she has begun to get used to her hair loss.

Since developing the condition, she has set up a support group for others like her, saying the decision to do so was a positive one.
