Contraceptive pill 'may cause hair loss'
Published: 22nd of March 2010
The contraceptive pill may be causing hair loss in some takers, it has been suggested.According to David Salinger, director of the International Association of Trichologists, the medication is resulting in a rise in the number of young women suffering from the condition, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
Certain older versions of the pill can trigger a genetic predisposition for hair thinning, the expert claimed.
He noted that the progesterone in some drugs can have a male hormonal effect on locks.
Mr Salinger added: "If a female has a genetic tendency and she then takes something which has male hormonal effects, that can trigger the thinning."
He went on to point out that he sees many women in their 20s and 30s losing their tresses for this reason.
As well as hormone issues, a lack of nutrition - such as a protein deficiency - is known to be a risk factor for hair loss.
