Hair extensions and weaves 'can cause hair loss'
Published: 16th of March 2010
People can risk experiencing hair loss if they are not careful with their use of hair extensions and weaves. This is according to sisters Idongesit and Imaobong Otummkpo, who run a salon in Lagos, NEXT reports.
The pair revealed that around 60 per cent of their clients are shedding their locks to some extent.
Commenting on the issue, they stated: "[Hair loss] is mostly a direct result of constant weaves and braids. Ideally, you are supposed to wait two to three weeks after relaxing your hair to fix it."
However, many people apply weaves and extensions in the same day as they had the previous lot taken out, the experts noted.
According to the siblings, the most common areas for females to experience hair loss are around their hairlines, at their crowns and at the nape of the scalp.
Recently, beautician Shahnaz Hussain suggested that too much hair drying can exacerbate hair loss problems, the Hindu reported.
