Stress 'can cause hair loss'
Published: 16th of March 2010
The cause of hair loss in some individuals may be stress, a doctor has claimed.Commenting on the issue in AsiaOne, consultant dermatologist Dr Derrick Aw said that rapid, recent hair fall is "very often" associated with a preceding stressful event.
Things cited by the expert that could fall into this category include an acute illness, severe physical or emotional trauma, pregnancy and delivery or major surgery.
He made his comments in response to a reader who is in her 40s and revealed that she recently began to shed her locks.
The individual also pointed out that both her parents have the problem as well.
Dr Aw noted that, because of the family connection, it is likely that there are some genetic factors involved too.
He also said that people can experience hair loss if they undergo a significant loss in body weight as a result of "intensive physical regimens" or crash dieting.
One way in which individuals can attempt to minimise hair loss is by ensuring they consume sufficient levels of protein.
