Hair loss 'can be traumatic'
Published: 15th of March 2010
Losing one's hair can be a traumatic experience, it has been claimed.Commenting on the subject in a SkyNewswire.com blog, a medical expert referred to as Dr Mosher said that there are many potential psychological effects related to the condition.
He commented: "Hair thinning may bring about despair, loss of enthusiasm, marital issues [and] even emotions of low self-confidence and worthlessness."
The doctor went on to say that many of those affected by the condition do not realise why they are losing their locks.
He listed a number of causes, including alopecia areata, which he noted results in the formation of bald patches.
A condition that may come and go, it is said to affect around one in 100 people, predominantly teenagers and young adults.
Thought to be the result of a problem with the immune system, it runs in the family in one in five cases, the NHS states.
