Hair loss myths 'common'
Published: 11th of March 2010
Myths surrounding hair loss are common, according to one news source.A HealthExpress blog noted that due to the prevalence of false beliefs over the issue, the NHS published some facts debunking misconceptions.
Among the factors often mistakenly connected with permanent baldness, it noted, is stress.
It remarked: "While stress can result in your hair falling out temporarily, it does not lead to male-pattern baldness."
Meanwhile, those who think that shampooing hair can make it fall out are also wrong, the blog claimed.
One further unfounded belief is that baldness is passed on from only the mother's side of the family.
In fact, hair loss can be inherited from either the mother or father, it added.
According to the NHS, alopecia areata, which involves patches of baldness that may come and go, runs in the family in one in five cases.
This condition predominantly affects teenagers and young adults and is thought to be caused by a problem with the immune system.
