Hair loss 'does not only come from the mother's side'
Published: 10th of March 2010
The theory that genetic hair loss only comes from the mother's side of the family is false. This is according to Dr Tejinder Bhatti, who said that losing one's tresses is not a trait that is confined to either parent, the Indian Express reports.
He stated: "If your mother or father's family has a history of baldness, you can inherit the gene and experience ... hair loss."
The expert went on to note that the main cause of hair loss in both men and women is genetic.
This is known as androgenetic alopecia and is more commonly referred to as male-pattern baldness.
Dr Bhatti also pointed out that, contrary to popular belief, the normal wearing of hats does not cause hair loss.
He said that it would be necessary for head wear to be so tight that it cut off circulation to the follicles for this to be the case.
