More women 'seeking treatment for hair loss'

Published: 8th of March 2010
More women `seeking treatment for hair loss` An increasing number of women are seeking treatment for hair loss, it has been suggested.

According to dermatologist Mary Gail Mercurio, people used to be more reticent to look for assistance concerning the issue.

She remarked: "In the past, many women experiencing hair loss would suffer in silence, not knowing where to turn for help and trying their best to hide the problem."

Now, however, more and more female patients are addressing the condition, Ms Mercurio added.

This is encouraging, the expert continued, as the sooner hair loss is diagnosed, the better the chances of successful treatment.

She went on to claim that often the first signs of hair thinning for women is that their parting grows or their ponytails become less thick.

There are many forms of hair loss, with the most common being male-pattern baldness - also known as androgenic alopecia.

As the NHS points out, any type of hair loss can lead to problems with self-esteem among sufferers.
