Women with hair loss caused by PCOS 'should seek medical advice'
Published: 2nd of March 2010
Women suffering from hair loss as a result of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have been advised to seek medical advice.According to an article in the Edmonton Journal, treatment is important to help control symptoms.
As well as a possible loss of hair on the head, the condition can result in excessive facial hair, fertility problems, weight gain and acne.
The NHS suggests that as many as one in five women in the UK have PCOS and around one in ten have it to some degree.
Commenting on the importance of getting it checked out, the news source stated: "Untreated polycystic ovary syndrome can cause serious health problems, such as diabetes and heart disease."
Treatments to help control the symptoms include medication to regulate hormones and weight loss programmes to lower blood pressure and cholesterol.
In addition, fertility assistance can be provided if sufferers are attempting to conceive, it noted.
