'Many women' concerned over hair loss
Published: 2nd of March 2010
A considerable number of women, including some young girls, are concerned over losing their hair. This is according to an Island Crisis article, which pointed out that the medical term for the condition is alopecia.
The NHS notes that the most common form of this is male-pattern baldness - which can affect both men and women.
Many factors can lead to hair loss, the news piece stated, with an excess of male hormones being one.
Stress and psychological reasons can also play their part, it suggested, with traumatic events and injuries sometimes leading to people experiencing degrees of baldness.
Another possible cause is excessive styling, dying and chemical applications to the hair.
It added: "Wearing a tight ponytail or pulled back hair style for long periods of time can cause traction alopecia."
This can be a particular issue for women used to wearing their tresses in braided styles over long periods of time, the article claimed.
