Pregnancy 'can cause hair loss'
Published: 23rd of February 2010
It is not unusual for women to experience hair loss as a result of pregnancy, it has been suggested.Writing in the Irish Times, Marion Kerr said it is "perfectly normal" for mothers to shed their locks in the months following the arrival of their young ones.
She claimed the issue affects between 40 and 50 per cent of postpartum women.
Ms Kerr added that during pregnancy, increased levels of oestrogen prolong the growing stage of hair folicles, meaning locks tend to look thicker and more luxuriant.
"However, after giving birth, oestrogen levels plummet, causing more hair to enter the resting phase. This results in a large proportion of hair falling out at the same time," she went on to state.
It is important not to panic, she advised, saying that the hair will grow back as hormone levels return to normal.
This may be difficult though, as the NHS points out that hair loss can cause sufferers to lose self-confidence and self-esteem.
