Factors other than genes 'can cause hair loss'
Published: 19th of February 2010
It is not just individuals' genetic makeup that causes them to suffer from hair loss, a doctor has said.According to expert in the field Dr Larry Shapiro, men and women can shed their locks for a plethora of reasons.
Among them are the effects of thyroid problems, dietary deficiencies, anesthesia, the use of growth hormone-based supplements during weight training and consuming weight-loss products.
In addition, natural or self-induced hormone changes can contribute to hair loss.
He went on to state: "People who undergo rapid weight loss - such as those who undergo gastric bypass surgery or have a gastric ring implanted - are also hair loss candidates."
However, not all nutritional supplements are bad for people's hair, he noted.
For example, one popular way for people to try to improve the health of their locks and reduce the chances of baldness is to ensure they get sufficient protein in their diets.
