Hair loss during menopause was "distressing", woman says
Published: 10th of February 2010
A particularly undesirable aspect of the menopause can be hair loss, one woman has noted.Writing in the Irish Times, Sylvia Thompson said that the process in general was "profoundly destabilising".
She stated that she felt as though "some alien force" had taken over her mind and body.
Ms Thompson added: "Apart from the overt physical and psychological symptoms, one of the most distressing parts of my experience of menopause was hair loss."
She went on to point out that she had always had quite fine, dark hair anyway but, as she went through the menopause, it began to look "really skimpy" and in places it was possible to see her scalp.
The loss of hair and other physical symptoms associated with the changes she was going through made her feel unattractive, she revealed.
According to the NHS, the average age for UK women to reach the menopause is 52.
