PCOS 'can lead to hair loss in women'
Published: 4th of February 2010
Women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) may experience hair loss as one of the symptoms, it has been claimed.Writing on SouthCoastToday.com, Dr Christian Pope said that there are a range of complaints patients with the condition can develop.
Others include weight gain and excessive facial hair, the expert noted.
According to Dr Pope, it is not understood why women develop the problem and the genetic contribution remains uncertain.
He added: "Obesity might be both a cause as well as a complicating factor with PCOS, further contributing to the signs and symptoms of the disorder."
When tested, women with the condition have high levels of male sex hormones, as well as high levels of insulin, glucose and cholesterol.
The NHS suggests that millions of women in the UK suffer from PCOS and it tends to run in families.
Those with the condition who are not overweight probably have a history of it among their relatives.
