The birth of a child 'can cause hair loss'

Published: 2nd of February 2010
The birth of a child `can cause hair loss` Having a child can cause some women to experience a degree of hair loss, a medical expert has said.

Writing on South Coast Today, Dr Paul Donohue noted that certain events that cause mental or physical stress - including giving birth - can result in a shedding of locks.

His comments were made in response to a reader's question concerning her experience with the problem.

She had been to a doctor, who used the term "telogen effluvium" when talking about her hair.

Dr Donohue noted that this refers to a stage of hair growth. He said that hair goes through a number of stages, the first of which being the anagen phase during which it grows.

This is followed by a transition time referred to as the catagen phase, which is followed by telogen - and during this time follicles shrink away from hair, causing it to fall out.

A telogen effluvium is an abnormal number of hairs that have prematurely entered the telogen phase and fallen out.

According to the NHS, this is a common form of alopecia and it tends to go away after several months.
