Athlete describes insecurity arising from hair loss
Published: 28th of January 2010
An athlete who took medication to prevent hair loss and was accused of cheating as a result has noted that his locks were always a cause of insecurity. During the 2006 Winter Olympics, Zach Lund was informed he had tested positive for a banned substance and was forced to leave, McClatchy Newspapers reports.
He had been set to compete in the skeleton racing in Turin, which is located in northern Italy.
Commenting on his experience, he said: "I had to pack my bags and walk out in front of everybody.
"They cut up my credential. I was on top of the world and then I was out on the street."
Lund revealed that he began losing his hair at the age of 19. He added that his locks were always his "biggest insecurity".
He had grown up with long hair but said it was never a "strong suit" for him.
Initially, the medication he used to reduce his hair loss was not banned but one year he forgot to check and it and it was after this that he was kicked out of the US team.
