Hair loss caused by thyroid problems 'can be tackled'
Published: 26th of January 2010
People experiencing hair loss which they believe could be the result of thyroid problems should seek medical advice as they may be able to cure the condition. There are a number of treatments that those suffering from hyperthyroidism can have that may stop the symptoms it causes, the Deseret News reports.
For example, Lee Ann Beard had the gland removed in 2006 after experiencing the symptoms of an over-active thyroid for more than a year.
Initially, she attributed her problems to the effects of stress and an imbalanced diet.
However, Ms Beard eventually realised that something else was to blame.
Doctors subsequently had her thyroid removed and she now takes a supplement that provides her with sufficient thyroxin levels.
She remarked: "I wish that [thyroid tests] were something the doctors did more, but I guess thyroid problems are still something very hard to diagnose."
Found in the neck, the thyroid produces hormones that are released into the bloodstream to control the body's growth and metabolism.
