Hair loss sufferers 'should be proactive'
Published: 25th of January 2010
People who discover they are suffering from hair loss should be proactive, it has been suggested.Writing in the Indian Express, Lesley Alderman said that she started losing her hair two years ago.
She remarked: "If your hair is thinning, see a dermatologist who specialises in hair loss right away. The dermatologist will take your medical history, run blood tests and may even do a five-minute scalp biopsy."
Ms Alderman added that the medical specialists she has spoken to estimate that around half the women they saw for hair loss had an identifiable trigger that could be addressed using such things as medication, hormones or better nutrition.
If no trigger is present, she added, it is likely that sufferers have androgenetic alopecia, which NHS figures suggest affects around one in 100 people.
Predominantly, it is teenagers and young adults who suffer and the condition runs in the family in one in five cases.
