Losing hair can be an "emotional" experience for women
Published: 15th of January 2010
While some degree of hair loss is not uncommon, women can find it an "emotional" experience, it has been claimed.Writing on KBTX, Sylvia Villarreal said that it can result in a loss of self-esteem among sufferers of the condition.
She remarked: "Many women experience some hair thinning or hair loss before menopause, but excessive hair loss is medically known as alopecia."
Ms Villarreal went on to suggest that hair loss can be caused by a number of things, with genetics sometimes playing a role.
In addition, thyroid complaints, anemia and auto-immune responses can be behind the phenomena, she said.
Offering hope to women suffering from thinning hair, she noted that there are a range of treatments available and, as a result, some people "will slowly begin to see hair re-growth".
One way in which people can try to combat hair loss is by ensuring they have a healthy diet which contains enough nutrients such as protein.
