Vitamin B shortage 'may cause hair loss'
Published: 12th of January 2010
A shortage of vitamin B may lead to hair loss, according to one expert in the field.Writing in the Jackson Clarion Ledger, registered dietician Kathy Warwick suggested that the substance is an important part of the diet.
She remarked: "Biotin, which is one of the B vitamins, is a key nutrient for production of skin cells, hair cells and fingernails."
People who have a lack of the nutrient may begin to lose their hair, she claimed, adding that they could also suffer from the skin complaint dermatitis.
Fortunately, biotin is "easily available in the diet", Ms Warwick suggested.
Good sources of it include bananas, oatmeal, enriched whole grains, peanuts, yogurt, eggs, tuna, pork and salmon, she added.
As well as a lack of vitamins, a shortage of proteins can result in health problems, with hair loss one possible consequence.
Writing in the Daily Telegraph recently, Bryony Gordon suggested that people who begin losing their hair should not panic.
