Hair loss 'can lead to body dysmorphic disorder'
Published: 11th of January 2010
People who suffer hair loss can develop body dysmorphic disorder, it has been suggested.According to an article in the Times of India, the loss of hair can be "devastating and shouldn't be ignored".
Body dysmorphic disorder causes people to become overly concerned with an imagined physical flaw or place too much significance on a minor defect.
It can have a significant impact on the lives of sufferers, as well as their families and friends.
The publication went on to say recommend a number of ways in which people can try to protect their hair during the winter.
Trichologist Dr Sharmishtha Deshpande suggested that people wear a scarf, hat or cap to shield their locks from the cold and wind.
However, they should be careful not to don garments which are too tight, the expert added.
This could result in a restriction of the circulation of blood in the scalp and lead to an increased risk of hair loss, she said.
