Alopecia sufferer: People should be educated about hair loss
Published: 7th of January 2010
People should be better educated about alopecia, a sufferer of the condition has claimed.Liz Albrecht, who is now 73, has lived with total body hair loss for most of her life and did not discover a name for her problem until three decades ago.
In an interview with DesMoinesRegister.com, she remarked: "It affected me in relationships until I was in my 40s when I finally met someone who had this disease and found out there was a name to it. It opened up doors."
Ms Albrecht went on to say that millions of people are affected by the medical condition and she feels strongly that information should be more publicly available.
She is involved in support groups which aim to provide assistance to those with alopecia.
The sessions offer sufferers a chance to discuss how they can deal with the issue and ways of concealing hair loss.
Writing in the Telegraph recently, Bryony Gordon said people should not panic if they begin to lose their hair and the problem is more common than they may realise.
