Hyperthyroidism can lead to hair loss, doctor points out
Published: 7th of January 2010
Individuals suffering from hyperthyroidism can experience hair loss, a medical expert has stated.Writing in the Hamilton Spectator, Dr Ally Prebtani said that the condition causes sufferers to experience a range of symptoms, one of which can be a thinning of hair.
Other affects include anxiety, shaking, shortness of breath, trouble concentrating, a fast pulse rate and difficulty sleeping, the expert added.
Also known as thyrotoxicosis or overactive thyroid, the health issue occurs when there is too much thyroid hormone in the body and it is more common in women than men.
Anyone who is experiencing hair loss that they believe may be connected to hyperthyroidism should visit their GP, Dr Prebtani recommended.
Doctors are able to test patient's blood for thyroid hormone levels and they may opt for a scan of the gland to determine the cause of the condition if it is found to be present.
The problem can be treated in a number of ways, including medication, surgery and radioactive iodine.
