Thinning hair can be treated, says expert

Published: 12th of November 2009
Thinning hair can be treated, says expert "Your hair changes with age. It becomes finer, drier and less elastic and it often becomes thinner," Dr Sarah Stacey has stated.

Writing in Good Housekeeping magazine, the expert explained that there are a number of steps that can be taken in order to reduce the likelihood of thinning hair, including maintaining a good diet.

She urged individuals to make sure they are getting enough iron and protein through foods such as eggs, fish, meat and vegetarian alternatives such as Quorn.

This was recently recommended by clinical nutritionist Kiranmayi Vaddey, who told SiliconIndia that vitamins are also important for keeping hair healthy.

Use of bleaches and hair relaxers that create very tight curls should be avoided as these can accelerate the process, she warned, but added that dyes and hairsprays will not have an adverse effect on the condition of hair.

Finally, Dr Stacey stated that there are a number of ways to stimulate hair growth for those who are losing circular patches of hair - a condition known as alopecia areata.
