Crash dieters risking addict-like relapse as well as hair loss?

Published: 12th of November 2009
Crash dieters risking addict-like relapse as well as hair loss? New research into crash dieting has revealed that people who eliminate certain foods can experience symptoms similar to drug addicts and alcoholics.

Changes in the brain akin to those seen in addicts were observed by researchers at the Boston University School of Medicine.

And the team suggested that the findings - published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal - indicated that this can contribute to relapses among dieters.

"The stress experienced by frequent dieters in abstinence from palatable food has neurobiological similarities to the negative emotional state of drug and alcohol addicts," said Valentina Sabino, co-author of the study.

Crash dieting can lead to a number of health problems as a result of lack of nutrition, with hair loss known to be among them.

This was a fact recently highlighted by dietician and nutritionist Yvette Quantz in an article for Daily World, as she explained that hair loss is one side effect of fad diets.
