Hair loss common as people age, says expert
Published: 11th of November 2009
People should not be surprised to experience hair loss as they get older, as this is one of the natural skin-related changes that occurs with age. That is the opinion of Dr Debra Jaliman, dermatologist at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.
She explained that some people are genetically predisposed to experience thinning hair, although it becomes more common later in life.
Indeed, anyone over the age of 40 will have less hair than they did in their youth - even if this does not appear to be particularly noticeable, Dr Jaliman told the American Academy of Dermatology.
But she went on to note that hair loss treatments can help reduce the effects.
It comes after Good Housekeeping observed that hair fibres get smaller in diameter with age, causing more and more to fall out while brushing or washing, although sudden, obvious thinning can be caused by a range of factors.
