Vegetarians at greater risk of hair loss?

Published: 9th of November 2009
Vegetarians at greater risk of hair loss? Vegetarians have been advised to take care not to omit key nutrients such as protein from their diets.

Writing for the Los Angeles Times, Emily Sohn explained that many people who do not eat meat are at risk of overlooking important elements of meals.

"Skipping the main course and eating just the starchy side dishes, such as potatoes, bread and rice, is one common mistake that often fails to satisfy nutritional requirements," she said.

Eggs and milk were highlighted as "complete proteins" that contain essential amino acids, while beans, rice and corn were also recommended.

Failing to consume enough protein is known to lead to a range of health problems - which can include hair loss, although treatments are available to those concerned about this effect.

Clinical nutritionist Kiranmayi Vaddey, in an article for SiliconIndia, recently noted that hair is 88 per cent protein and this nutrient, along with a range of vitamins, is vital in keeping it healthy.
