Women risking hair loss by crash dieting?
Published: 6th of November 2009
Many women in the UK could be risking their health by crash dieting, as research has revealed that 80 per cent have done so at least once in the last year.A survey of females aged 25 to 45 was carried out by fatfreefitness.co.uk, with more than half of those who crash dieted saying they did so in order to look "more attractive".
However, 95 per cent stated that they returned to their original weight after beginning to eat normally again.
A lack of nutrition caused by crash dieting can have a range of negative effects on health, with hair loss known to be a major one.
And founder of fitfreefitness.co.uk Rich Leigh warned that crash diets are not a long-term solution, commenting: "As soon as you start eating normally again, your metabolism is lower and then you start putting on the weight."
He went on to suggest that this effect is seen in older people in particular.
