Smoking increases risk of hair loss, study shows
Published: 3rd of November 2009
Smokers are at greater risk of developing skin problems such as scarring and hair loss, scientists have found.Research conducted at the McGill University Health Centre investigated the effect cigarettes can have on those with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) - an autoimmune disorder affecting one in every 2,000 people.
Leader of the team Dr Christian Pineau explained that smoking led to a "significantly increased" risk of the condition.
And co-author of the report Dr Sasha Bernatsky commented: "Even in healthy people, cigarette smoke has both immediate and long-term effects on the skin, its blood vessels and on hair follicles," adding that cigarettes were already thought by some to increase the risk of SLE in the first place.
Katie McBeth of the University of Virginia recently wrote for the Cavalier Daily that smoking can have a range of negative effects on people's health, explaining that brittle hair is one of these.
