Hormones 'contribute to male hair loss'
Published: 23rd of October 2009
Men have been offered an explanation for one of the more common forms of hair loss.According to the South Wales Echo, three in ten males experience thinning and a receding hairline by the age of 30 - which can be damaging to self-esteem and confidence.
The news source was responding to the concerns of a 32-year-old reader who is beginning to experience hair loss.
It explained that the hormone dihydrotestosterone - which is broken down from testosterone - causes hair follicles to shrink.
They are then only able to produce fine, thin hairs, before eventually shrinking so much that growth stops completely.
Noting the common progression of receding hair leaving a U-shaped ring around the head, the paper stated: "This typical male-pattern hair loss runs in families and with time may continue to progress to complete baldness."
Genetic factors were recently highlighted as a cause of hair loss by Kira Blair Mayo, who wrote for the Cavalier Daily that treatments can help slow down the process.
