Family history of baldness 'an indicator of future hair loss'

Published: 14th of October 2009
Family history of baldness `an indicator of future hair loss` The impact of hereditary factors on the potential for hair loss has been highlighted.

Writing for the Cavalier Daily, Kira Blair Mayo explained that a history of baldness on either side of the family increase the risk for thinning hair.

She noted that pattern baldness sees the growth cycle shortened, resulting in hair becoming less sturdy and falling out more easily.

Commenting on family history, she remarked: "It increases your chances of balding and also affects the age at which you begin to lose your hair [and] the rate at which you lose it."

Those concerned that they will be affected may wish to use hair growth treatments, while good nutrition was also recommended.

Dermatology expert Dr Vijay Aswani recently told HealthJockey that emotional and physical shocks can accelerate hair loss.

He outlined a number of factors that can contribute to thinning hair, which included poor eating habits and the use of drugs.
