Expert outlines potential causes of hair loss
Published: 12th of October 2009
Some of the most common causes of hair loss have been highlighted by an expert.Speaking to HealthJockey, Dr Vijay Aswani - of Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre's department of dermatology - explained that a number of factors can trigger hair loss.
People typically shed 50 to 100 hairs each day, he noted, but baldness occurs when this rate exceeds hair growth.
"Poor nutrition, drugs, hormonal changes, traction scalp infection and certain diseases cause hair fall," said Dr Aswani, adding that emotional and physical shocks can accelerate the process.
The specialist also recommended that people avoid aggressive treatments for split ends in order to minimise the risk of hair loss, suggesting that cutting the hair just above the split end is a better way to deal with this.
Dermatologist Dr Eileen Murray recently told homemakers.com that a poor diet is one of the most common causes of hair loss in women, suggesting that those hoping to prevent it should eat plenty of iron and protein.
