Women advised to 'remove hair extensions'
Published: 28th of July 2010
An expert has advised fashionistas to take a break from extensions amid fears they could cause female hair loss.Writing for the McClatchy News Service, style and beauty specialist Jean Patteson responded to a reader who had sent in a question regarding the head accessories.
The correspondent was concerned that the enhancements had left her with bald patches after she noticed they had given her scalp the appearance of being sparse.
Ms Patteson recommended the scribe not panic but to remove the additions as soon as possible.
"But the weight of extensions can pull the scalp tight, inhibiting hair growth and causing that thinned-out look," she explained.
In the meantime, she suggested the reader consult with a hairdresser about the best cut to improve body and volume and hide any thin patches.
Her advice may be timely, as several celebrities in recent weeks have been spotted with apparent hair loss thought to be caused by extensions, such as Naomi Campbell and Britney Spears.
