Sufferer copes with his male hair loss 'through humour and staying calm'
Published: 6th of July 2010
A 43-year-old man who suffers from male hair loss due to the onslaught of alopecia areata has spoken out about his struggle, noting that he tries to find the humour in the situation whenever he can.Matt Kelley first began noticing bald patches in his beard when he was 38 - and by the time six more weeks had passed, his eyebrows, lashes, facial hair, arm hair and tresses had all fallen out, the New York Times reported.
Describing it as "like a forest fire", he found it difficult to adjust to the change at first, trying to keep it hidden and building up a collection of hats.
However, once several years had gone by, Mr Kelley decided not to hide anymore and stepped out in style at a costume party, complete with a hairless cat he has named Hairy.
"I joke with my friends that I want to build a hairless Noah’s ark," he added, noting that he just tries "to stay calm and be OK" with his condition, although he is excited about trying possible treatments.
Meanwhile, supermodel Naomi Campbell was recently spotted out and about with a bald patch near her temple.
