Alopecia areata 'is a common form of hair loss'

A considerable number of people suffer from alopecia areata, it has been noted.In a Reading Eagle article, it is suggested that around four million individuals in the US alone have the hair loss condition.
Often beginning in childhood, the medical complaint is suffered by both sexes and it affects all ethnic backgrounds, the news source states.
Despite its emotional impact, this form of hair loss does not cause physical pain and is not life-threatening.
In many cases, the disease results in a few bald patches, but sometimes the shedding of locks is more comprehensive.
According to the NHS, alopecia areata affects around one in hundred people in the UK and it runs in the family in one in five cases.
It is thought that the condition is caused by a problem with the immune system and in most instances hair begins to grow back after around a year.
