Hair loss warning over extensions issued
Published: 9th of February 2010
A warning has been issued concerning the possible dangers of hair extensions.According to the Trichological Society - which describes itself as an independent, autonomous, professional and educational body - they can cause people to suffer hair loss.
It suggested that a rising number of salons are offering to do extensions without having the necessary qualifications and knowledge.
The society's Barry Stevens said: "There can be quite serious consequences [of] wearing them for a long period. They are capable of destroying hair permanently."
For example, people can develop bald patches and alopecia if they have extensions which are put in incorrectly.
Mr Stevens went on to say that poor quality extensions will become caught when brushed and will eventually lead to hair being ripped out.
He went on to state that they can pull on natural hair, adding that they are heavy, tangle easily and do not absorb water.
