Many women may fail to seek help for hair loss because they are too self-conscious, one specialist has claimed.

Beauty expert Louis Licari, writing for the Huffington Post, stated that thinning hair is often associated purely with men, but it is a cross-gender problem.

"Women's hair generally becomes thinner throughout the head," he remarked. "I think it's an embarrassment to most women and this makes it a taboo subject."

According to Mr Licari, females as young as 30 can suffer from hair loss and the first sign of this happening tends to be an overall lack of body.

Getting a good haircut can fix this kind of ailment temporarily, he added, but if the problem begins to grow in severity, it is often best to see a dermatologist.

Writing in a blog post for the New York Times, Tara Parker-Pope last month said that hair loss is "especially traumatic" for women.
