Hair loss 'can cause men considerable anxiety'
Published: 3rd of February 2010
Men can experience considerable anxiety if they begin suffering from hair loss, a medical expert has claimed.Writing in the Daily Mail, Dr Martin Scurr pointed out that both male and female patients can experience such difficulties.
His comments were made in response to a reader's letter which expressed concern for her son, who has the condition folliculitis decalvans.
A form of alopecia, it involves scarring and is characterised by redness and swelling around the hair follicles.
Dr Scurr remarked: "Hair loss probably causes men more anxiety than anything else in their lives - dramatically affecting confidence."
He noted that the medical complaint is confirmed by biopsy under local anaesthetic, with a dermatologist taking a piece of skin from the scalp and seeking the bacteria which is associated with the health complaint under a microscope.
Both men and women can develop folliculitis decalvans and people of any age can be affected by it.
