Hair loss 'can cause women to lose self-esteem'
Published: 2nd of February 2010
Women who begin to lose their hair can suffer from a lack of self-esteem, it has been claimed.Writing in the Palm Beach Daily News, Carolyn Susman suggested that even people who are otherwise healthy cannot "sweep under the rug" the issue of hair loss.
She stated: "Sure, men are bothered by a loss of locks, but women without luxurious manes can suffer much more. Thin hair can project illness or fragility that just isn't there most of the time."
Furthermore, the problem can be the result of a serious underlying causes, such as thyroid disease, she added.
One such medical condition is hyperthyroidism, which leads to a range of symptoms - including sudden weight loss or gain, an increased appetite and hyperactivity.
Ms Susman went on to suggest that iron deficiency and excess male hormone can also lead to hair loss in women and those who are concerned they may have such things should seek medical advice.
