Hair loss "especially traumatic" for women
Published: 18th of January 2010
Women can find losing their hair "especially traumatic", it has been claimed.Writing in a New York Times blog, Tara Parker-Pope revealed that she has herself experienced the problem.
She said that a couple of years ago, she noticed that there were more hairs than usual in her comb and in the bath drain.
Ms Parker-Pope visited a doctor, who ran some tests and sent her home with a special shampoo and a serum to use on her scalp.
Commenting on her feelings at the time, she remarked: "I was a wreck. If someone had told me there was a cure in a remote village in the mountains of Bhutan, I would have put on my hiking boots and boarded a plane."
While no one wants to lose their hair, men can shave their heads and some look attractive when they do, she suggested.
However, the medical condition is different for women and is often harder to deal with, she said.
Ms Parker-Pope went on to cite figures from the American Academy of Dermatology - which claims to represent virtually all practicing dermatologists in the US - indicating that 30 million women in the country suffer from hair loss.
