Stress can cause hair loss in women, authors point out
Published: 15th of January 2010
An excess of stress can cause women's hair to fall out, two authors have said.In their new book entitled So Stressed, Stephanie McClellan and Beth Hamilton point out that females can experience a thinning and dulling of their locks when they are in this situation, ABC News reports.
They state: "Many of our patients who are under chronic stress complain of hair loss. They are troubled by the amount of hair they find in the shower after they wash their hair."
Women concerned about the prospect of losing their hair due to psychological issues may be welcome the suggestion by Ms McClellan and Ms Hamilton that the damage will often stop once the strain is resolved.
In extreme cases, however, stress can result in significant hair loss, the experts state.
For example, some people may develop alopecia, a condition which the NHS says affects around one in 100 people in the UK.
