Stress 'can lead to hair loss in women'
Published: 14th of January 2010
Women can experience hair loss when they go through unusually stressful life events, it has been claimed.According to dermatologist Dr Rebecca Euwer, females can lose up to 50 per cent of their locks as a result of such things as childbirth, surgery or a death in the family, the Baltimore Sun reports.
She commented: "When someone comes in and says they're losing their hair, you ask, 'Well, what happened about three months ago?'."
While this form of medical complaint can occur in men, it is more common among women, the expert added.
Dr Euwer went on to point out that people lose around one per cent of their hair, so to see in the region of 100 strands falling out a day is normal.
Any more than this, however, and women may want to visit their doctor to see if there is a problem, she advised.
It is known that a healthy diet rich in substances such as protein can help to prevent hair loss.
