'Half of men' have male pattern hair loss by age of 50

Around 50 per cent of men have male pattern baldness by the time they reach the age of 50, it has been suggested.Writing in the Irish Times, Thomas Lynch said that the condition occurs in people who are more sensitive to the effects of the hormone dihydrotestorone (DHT).
It is thought that DHT shortens the length of time the hair spends in the growth phase and it also causes hairs to become smaller and finer.
NHS figures show that this form of hair loss affects around 6.5 million men in the UK.
Mr Lynch pointed out that male pattern baldness appears as a receding hairline with or without hair loss on the top of the head.
He added: "It was said that baldness was inherited from the mother's side of the family, but it is now believed that it can come from either side of the family."
According to consultant dermatologist at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust Dr Susan McDonald-Hull, young men feel hair loss "pretty acutely".
